"SD Voyager Magazine features Grace of Thunder"

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Barzilai.

Danielle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born and raised in Texas until I moved to San Diego to finish high school and go to art school. I brought with me a little bit of Texas influence to my design and style, something that I have fun blending into our breezy beach culture here on the coast! After leaving Otis College of Art and Design, I began to divide my time between acting and working in fashion. Grace of Thunder came out of my studio, just a passion project at first, something I would do for friends. High quality, handmade, ethically sourced leather goods are tough to find in San Diego! That’s what Grace of Thunder has been all about since the beginning and I am continuing to explore and push the boundaries of style with leather goods.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Business is not in my veins. I can spend 80 hours a week designing and inventing, talking to other artisans and boutique owners. But if I have to design a marketing strategy, balance the books, or forecast a supply chain I am lost! Those are things I had to learn on my own. Hours and hours of Googling and talking with more experienced friends of mine. It’s also something I just became okay with! I’m not a take-no-prisoners executive hell-bent on returning profit to shareholders. I am a designer and this work is my passion. What I am learning in the business world is a fun side effect.

What should we know about Grace of Thunder? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Grace of Thunder is one of the premier leather goods accessory fashion lines in San Diego. Leatherwork is a smaller community here, but where I come from in Texas — leather is everything! I am happy to see people here light up when they see what you can do with quality materials and an eye for style.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
I’m not sure how original this is, but you just cannot let yourself be intimidated. You can do it, there are resources for you if you decide to do it, and you’ll always be grateful you tried!
